Describing My Weekly Routine

Mary: So I work um, Monday through Friday, usually in the mornings from about 8 in the morning until 1 in the afternoon.

Mary: So my afternoons are free for chores, or cleaning, or grocery shopping or um, sometimes baby-sitting for my cousin’s children.

Mary: Um, Friday mornings I have yoga class, so it’s a bit different.

Mary: And um, the weekends, my husband and I usually see friends in the evening, um, and often we just have a lazy day.

Vocabulary:

Monday through Friday – (phrase) the standard five-day workweek or school week, spanning from the first working day to the last working day before the weekend, “Most corporate offices operate Monday through Friday and close for the weekend.”

chores – small, routine household tasks that must be done regularly, such as washing dishes, dusting, or vacuuming, “We try to finish all our weekly chores on Saturday morning so we can relax on Sunday.”

grocery shopping – the activity of buying food, beverages, and other essential household items at a supermarket or market, “I prefer doing my grocery shopping late at night when the supermarket is quiet.”

baby-sitting – the act of temporarily looking after and taking care of children while their parents are away from home, “She is baby-sitting her young nephew tonight while her sister goes to a dinner party.”

lazy day – (idiom) a relaxing day spent doing very little work, physical exercise, or productive activity, “It was raining all Sunday, making it the perfect excuse to stay in bed and have a lazy day.”
