Kim Kardashian-West Asks for Compassion for Her Husband Kanye West

Kim Kardashian-West, the reality TV star, has appealed for compassion for her husband Kanye West, who she says is suffering from a bipolar episode.

West has made a number of troubling social media posts in recent weeks and rambled in tears at a public appearance in South Carolina, sparking fears for his mental health.

“As many of you know, Kanye has bipolar disorder,” Kardashian-West wrote on her Instagram page.

West announced he had the illness in 2018 and has in the past lamented that he feels medication stifles his creativity. He was hospitalised for psychiatric treatment in 2016.

Bipolar disorder is a form of mental illness characterised by mood swings between extreme energy and activity followed by depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

West has written on Twitter of how he was trying to divorce Kardashian-West for trying to get him committed to an institution.

“I kindly ask that the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this,” wrote Kardashian-West to her 180 million followers.

She called her husband, with whom she has four children, a “brilliant but complicated person”.

“Those who are close with Kanye know his heart and understand his words sometimes do not align with his intentions,” Kardashian-West wrote.
