Advice For Moving to a New Place
Olivia: Before I move to a new city I use Google Maps to look up neighborhoods. Um, I do this because I can see all the important things such as restaurants, um, entertainment, shopping, parks, roads, everything. So I use Google Maps to help me with that.
Olivia: And then after I find a neighborhood where I want to live I, I mean neighborhoods, I consult a different website to look up prices because that’s also extremely important to see the prices of a neighborhood to know whether that neighborhood is expensive or inexpensive.
Olivia: And I also use various websites to look up cultural events so that I can adapt to a new place, um, and look up anything I’m unsure about in the city that I will be moving to. And also if I’m unsure about a certain neighborhood, like if I’m between two neighborhoods, then I choose the neighborhood that has the best transportation and the best selection of restaurants.
Vocabulary:
look up – to search for information on a map, in a book, or on the internet, “You can look up the bus schedule online.”
neighborhoods – different areas or sections of a town or city where people live, “This city has many quiet, green neighborhoods.”
entertainment – shows, movies, music, or other activities that people do for fun, “The downtown area has great entertainment like theaters and concert halls.”
consult – to look at a book, website, or ask an expert to get information, “You should consult a map if you get lost.”
extremely important – very crucial or deeply necessary, “It is extremely important to lock the front door when you leave.”
expensive or inexpensive – costing a lot of money versus costing very little money, “The menu has both expensive or inexpensive food options for customers.”
various websites – several different pages on the internet, “I checked various websites to find the cheapest plane ticket.”
cultural events – activities like festivals, concerts, or art shows that celebrate a community’s lifestyle, “The city hosts many cultural events during the summer.”
adapt to – to change your habits so you can get used to a new place or situation, “It takes time to adapt to living in a foreign country.”
unsure about – not certain, confused, or not confident about something, “If you are unsure about the rules, ask the manager.”
between two neighborhoods – trying to choose one option out of two different local areas, “She is between two neighborhoods and cannot decide where to rent an apartment.”
transportation – ways of traveling from place to place, such as buses, trains, subways, or cars, “The city has excellent public transportation.”
selection – a wide choice or variety of different things you can pick from, “The bakery has a large selection of cakes and cookies.”
