A Summer to Remember
One of my all-time favorite memories is from the summer after we finished high school. My childhood friend, who had immigrated to New Zealand when we were 12, returned for the first time since we’d parted ways. We had spent so many years growing up together, and finally reuniting as 18-year-olds felt like a coming-of-age moment — seeing how we’d both changed while also reconnecting with that shared past.
We spent the days wandering familiar streets, laughing over old jokes, and recounting adventures from our childhood. At night, we stayed up talking until sunrise, sharing dreams, fears, and everything in between. It was magical to realize that distance and time hadn’t weakened our bond.
That summer cemented a friendship that has lasted over 20 years. Even now, thinking about it brings a warmth and nostalgia unlike anything else — one of the best memories of my life.
